Sleepover Fun!

Last Saturday was a long day for some of us!!

After a lovely church day out walking on the Otley Chevin, 8 from our Inters Group(9-11’s) that meet on a Sunday morning came together to sleep over in church.

The evening began with pizza making, the children were competing for best looking pizza and best tasting pizza.  Val Boyd took her time deliberating as she assessed and tasted each one.  She finally decided on giving Francesca Best Looking Pizza for her four season pizza with different toppings in each quarter. The taste test took yet more time but eventually Val declared Mary the winner.  After all that we all enjoyed eating the pizza and talking about our exciting weeks at school.

This was followed by some sweet games.  The chocolate game was my personal highlight, six was the number to roll and the elation at throwing a 6 was palpable.  The key was getting on the very difficult ski gloves as quickly as possible and trying to get as much chocolate in your mouth before someone else threw a 6.  Fun was had by all although some got more chocolate than others!!!

Finally, it was time to sit down and watch ‘Soul Surfer’, a real life film about a girl who struggles with a challenging life experience only to see how God uses the situation to give her a platform for sharing his love.

This film has many different teaching points but this year I choose to follow it by reinforcing the prayer element.  Each child received a ‘Prayer Experiment Notebook’ to encourage them in their own prayer lives.

Eventually it was time for a game of ‘Sardines’ (hide and seek but one person hides and everyone else has to find them) in the dark.  Everyone had a turn at hiding, some finding very obscure places to cram into and then it was bedtime. The children were all eventually asleep by 12:15am.

The next morning we were up by 7am, eating our breakfast followed by a game of picture scavenger hunt. The morning finished with bacon butties and some chill time before church.

Thanks to Val, Ian and Claire for all their help, I hope they enjoyed it as much as the children and I did….  I guess when you get asked ‘can we do this again?’ you know the children have had a good time…  Maybe at Christmas?

Friendship, Fellowship and Fun – Welcome to FX

Last Sunday saw MBC launch a new venture: FX.

It’s something that’s open to anyone and everyone who wants to come and meet up with other people from church and beyond. The idea is that on the fourth Sunday of each month in a relaxed and informal way we do just that.

Last week around seven families met together at Golden Acre Park for nothing more challenging than a gentle stroll around the woods and the lake.

Cas Stoodley who set up FX says. “For our first FX I wanted to be out and about because as summer turns to autumn I find that time spent outdoors, in God’s creation, always reminds me of his goodness, and joining together like this is a great way for us to share with one another how He is working in our lives.”

Future FX dates are: Sunday 22nd of October – at Moortown Baptist Church 3-4:30pm with a film for the children, a toddler area and the all important coffee and cake. Sunday 26th of November – again at MBC, 3-4:30pm with board games, craft, a toddler area and the all important coffee and cake and Sunday 24th of December which is of course Christmas Eve.

Are you listening for that still small voice? How Messy Church can help

I don’t know about you but sometimes life just gets on top of me.  I know it’s happening when I shout at the kids and can’t focus on a task at hand, when I am talking to someone but my mind is wandering even though I really want to be present in the moment.

At times like these I realise that I have lost my focus.  For when I retreat into my ‘cave’ and try and find some time to listen to God all I can hear are the earthquakes, wind and fire around me.  I am doing most of the talking and God, well I expect he is listening and trying to say something.  It isn’t until all that noise around me stills that I can hear the voice in the silence.  The Hebrew word for ‘still’ is only used three times in the whole New Testament, it alludes to a calmness that comes after activity that could be seen to be frightening.  It is a word that exudes peace and a definite presence.

The peace and calm, the stillness that is experienced in the prescence of God Almighty is overwhelming but not in the same way as the things going on around us.  In fact his presence puts everything back in its place and reminds us that God is in control.  We are not alone, everything doesn’t depend on us, God is our strength and our provider, and He never allows us to take on more than we can bear.

So this Friday, I invite you all to come along to Messy Church and find out more about this God who brings calm and stills the storm.  Our God who is able to do immesurably more than we could ever hope or imagine.

Cas.

Have you heard about SPREE?

Last June, Moortown Baptist Church along with Riverside Church took 40 children (in Year 3-Year 10) away for a fun packed Christian weekend break run by Urban Saints.

It was a great weekend for the kids to worship with their friends, and learn about God in fun and engaging way.  Not only that but as part of the weekend at Holly Bush Farm in Thirsk there are huge inflatables, a silent disco, crafts, games and so much more.

This year we are planning on going again.  The weekend falls on the 23rd-25th of June and costs £55 per child.  That includes food and fun. If your child would like to come please let me know as soon as possible at cas.stoodley.mbc@btconnect.com.  It will be awesome!!

Help….

If you are interested in sleeping in a field and seeing God work in the lives of children – give me a call!!  Or maybe you can’t make it but you have a tent that can – all water-proof tents welcome.

Finally, if kids aren’t your thing but you are free on the Friday to put up lots of tents in a field you would be really welcome to join me!!

Above all please start praying now for the children who are coming – I already have 17 children on my list!
