Ahead of our annual Plant Sale MBC’s garden upgrade starts to take shape

With the ground leveled and the paving slabs on order MBC’s new outdoor seating area is fast taking shape. When completed the garden will feature benches, a table and a number of flower beds. Many thanks to those who helped prepare the ground and also of course to our volunteer gardeners who are working tirelessly to improve the church grounds.

However, like many things over the last twelve months the way we are planning our annual Plant Sale is changing. For now here’s everything you need to know: When – Saturday 15th May, Time – 2pm-4pm, Where – Church Car Park, Proceeds to the Romania Support Group.

If you are bringing plants which you are growing for us please drop them off on the Saturday morning, there will be people at church to receive them (times tbc)

Please observe the usual social distancing rules. No more than six people or two households in a group, please keep a safe distance from people in other groups.

Please be careful how and where you park as there will be people milling about. We suggest parking at the far end of the car park and along the front wall of church. The large area to the side of the Music Room will be being used for the sale.

More details will be given out closer to the day.  However, if you have any questions please contact Jenny Dixon on steveandjenny@ntlworld.com or Nicky Gibb on nickyg8@btinternet.com

19th April. The Music Room opens for prayer and there’s a Beacon of hope as our Monday morning cafe goes alfresco

Hi everyone. from next Monday, 19th April, we are reopening the Music Room for private prayer from 10am until 11ish. This will be on a drop-in basis, no need to pre-book. We have capacity for up to 12 people to pray in the Music Room at the same time socially distanced or sitting with people in your bubble. The Beacon Café will also be running at the same time.

However, as the rooms inside church can only be used for worship and prayer this means that Beacon cannot meet in the Sanctuary as usual until after June 21st. Hence, we have going al fresco!
There will be tables and chairs set up outside (the forecast is very good) and volunteers will be serving hot drinks and individually wrapped cakes (please note there will be absolutely no self service).

If people want to take their drinks into the Music Room and pray that’s fine but if we exceed 12 people in there then some people will need to wait outside until someone leaves.

We would also ask that people don’t use the Music Room as a place to shelter and chat as this is not permitted and may of course disturb those that are praying.  Also, once you have finished praying please wipe down the chair and table you have used before leaving.  Antibacterial products and paper towels will be available for this purpose.

Outside at Beacon, people will be allowed to sit in groups of six, or two households but must keep a distance of 2 meters between themselves and other groups. There is no upper limit for people outside as long as they stay in their sixes and don’t mingle with other groups. It is not now compulsory to wear a face covering outdoors, however feel free to wear one if it makes you feel safer.

Unfortunately the book swap will not be available for COVID reasons. However, if you want to bring a book to read either inside as part of your devotional or outside in a quiet space in the sun then that’s fine too.

We would ask that people use their own private toilet facilities before coming, however if the use of the church toilets is necessary then the two cubicles on the office corridor will be available. Please ensure that you clean and sanitize areas you have touched afterwards. There will be antibacterial products and paper towels available in each cubicle for this purpose. The toilets on the main corridor will not be available.

The above events have been approved by the ILT, and the Health and Safety team. A full risk assessment will be carried out for both beforehand.

Can’t wait to see you there! If it works we will do it every week.

God bless!

Church at Home – Sunday 11th April – Jesus the chef

On Sunday 11th of April we continue Journeying with Jesus. Today we look at Jesus the chef with John chapter 21 verses 1 to 14 as our text.

To join us for our live 10.45am Facebook stream you will need to go to facebook.com/moortownbaptistchurch or to click HERE and then afterwards to take part in our pre-recorded YouTube programme you’ll simply need to click HERE

This week’s chat mat is again available from the box on the MBC steps or by download HERE

Easter 2021 – share your special memories

With Covid-19 restrictions gradually easing it is to be hoped that next Easter, Easter 2022, will be a little bit more “normal” than the last two.

That said, by the number of posts that have been flying around Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the like it looks as if despite certain limitations most of us have not only survived but had a good time doing so.

If you have any special memories or better still photographs of your 2021 Easter experience why not share them. You can do this by emailing them to mbcnewspics@gmail.com and towards the end of the week we’ll pop them into a gallery and put them on the church website.

There’s a couple of examples here to get us started. Above you see Shelley who spent part of Easter Monday baking bunny inspired bread (and Easter dinosaurs) while below we get a glimpse of the Sherbourne family who enjoyed a zoom Easter Quiz in which each of the seven contestants had their own specialist round.

Easter Day – Church at Home – remember there’s no live stream but at 10.30am we start the day on Zoom with a live, all age communion

On Easter Day we begin our worship at 10.30am with a live all age communion zoom. Invitations to this will or already have been sent out to everyone on our mailing list. However, if you haven’t received one and you would like to join us all you need to do is contact Shelley on shelley.dring@moortownbaptistchurch.onmicrosoft.com and she will add you to the list.

Following that you are all invited to switch over to the MBC YouTube channel for a full blown Easter Celebration. Once again Chat Mats are available (I nearly but not quite said compulsory) and as in previous week’s they can either be picked up in person from the box in the doorway at church or download right HERE

Elsewhere on the website you can find a full list of everything that’s happening at Moortown over Easter but if you have children one of things I think looks absolutely brilliant is the QR Code trail. Being of a certain age I know very little about QR Codes but those much younger than me tell me that it involves finding a number of yellow signs in the MBC carpark, scanning them on your mobile phone and hey presto you’re straight through to a video all about the Easter story… a special bonus is, I’m told, that if you do this between 10am and 4pm on Saturday April 3rd you’ve also a fair chance of finding some chocolate eggs!

So we look forward to seeing you all on Sunday either live on zoom or even more virtually via our YouTube playlist.

Lunch Club hits the road to deliver more than 40 Easter goodie bags

With the sun blazing down and some but by no means all wearing bunny ears Carole Smith and her Lunch Club team set out on Wednesday to deliver more than forty Easter goodie bags.

Beautifully decorated with wooden crosses each bag contained all sorts of things including: a cake, a lolly, a palm cross, a What’s on Programme of everything that’s taking place at MBC over Easter, a card, a personal message from our new Deacons and more.

We know from comments we’ve received after past door step drops just how much these visits mean to so many people. So well done to Carole and to the bakers, the crafters, the packers and the drivers; this type of  ministry, particularly after the year we’ve all had really is what the church is all about.

MBC’s gardeners lead the way to a bright future

I don’t know whether you have had the chance to walk past MBC recently but if you have there’s no way that you will have failed to notice that things are looking a bit different. For a start the bins have moved (more on that later), the shabby hand rails have been returned to their original 1972 colour – British Racing Green. Then high above the beautiful hand crafted cross tired planters have been restocked with show off bedding that shamelessly flaunts its reds, yellows, blues and greens. And as for as ribbons and bows, well, we’re currently carrying a larger stock than a high end haberdashery.

So why all the activity, and why now? Could it be a direct response to our theme a couple of weeks ago; Jesus the gardener? We’d all like to think so. Could it that extra hour we gained last Sunday has not only lightened our evenings but also our spirits? Could it be Monday’s easing of lockdown rules that’s underlined just how much we need one another’s socially distanced company? Or could it simply be that right now following a winter of discontent the Easter story is reminding us not only of the glorious resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ but also of so many other things we can to be thankful for.

In a church, as in any community people have different talents, different gifts. Here at Moortown although you wouldn’t know it to look at them we have quite a number of people who have green fingers. And in the main it’s these folk that we need to thank for our new look. I’m not going to name names, far too risky, but you know who you are.

So on behalf of the rest of us, those who in terms of horticulture and wood turning merely stand and stare thank you for your enthusiasm and your commitment. Thank you for the colour you are bringing into our lives. Thank you for your generosity in that you have decided to make your ad-hoc gardening group something more regularly and also to welcome anyone who wants to join you.

Meanwhile back to the bins. The bins have been moved because preliminary plans are now afoot to redesign the area between Kate’s office and the sub-station in order to create a space where, when the weather permits people can sit and relax. The project, with all costs covered will when complete feature neatly trimmed borders, a raised flower bed, wooden benches and a table all set on a smart paved base. We’ll soon be circulating more details, and whilst we’re not in a position to include anything over elaborate (certainly not pergolas and/or water features) we will of course be inviting your comments.
