Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. KJV.

Jane Coates – more thoughts and prayers

“You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. The Message

“How happy are those who know what sorrow means for they will be given courage and comfort! JBP

Grieving in all its forms and any kind of loss or sense of loss, not just the loss of a loved one, can cause overwhelming sadness and grief. It may be the loss of a relationship, job, health, physical or mental wellbeing, finance, prospects, career, or whole host of other life situations. Sadness, grief, sorrow, and loss of this kind, can cause a ‘heart sickness’ that feels as if it cannot be healed.

The prophet Jeremiah, when he considered the ruin of his people and the captivity of Judah, expressed his overwhelming sadness, intense sense of loss and sorrow, poignantly. “Incurable sorrow has overwhelmed me, and my heart is sick within me”. “My sorrow is beyond healing; my heart is faint within me”. “There is no cure for my grief. My heart breaks for what I see and hear.” Jeremiah: 8 v 18. Jeremiah longed for hope and a healing balm.

God wants us to know that whatever the nature of our pain, sorrow, loss and grief, we can experience His comfort, as He is the source of every comfort.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.2 Cor. 1 v 3-4

Jesus: Don’t get lost in despair; believe in God, and keep on believing in Me. John 14 v 1 The Voice

“Don’t let yourselves be disturbed. Trust in God and trust in me. John 14 v 1

Supporting our own… Christopher and Bela Singh

Update for October 2021 – Christopher & Bela Singh

Just like 2020, this year 2021 is going so fast. It is hard to believe that we are now heading towards November and the end of 2021. Where have the days, weeks and months gone.

Covid seems to have taken over our lives in one way or the other. Both Bela and I were vaccinated and soon we will be getting our booster vaccine, that is the third dose. By God’s grace we both and our families are safe and have not suffered with Covid. Thanks for your prayers for our health.

Face masks at MBC

With cases rising and experts predicting there could soon be as many as 100,000 new Covid-19 infections a day your Leadership Team has agreed that the wearing of face masks, in church, is now a necessity.

This decision comes in response to a number of enquiries from concerned members and it wasn’t taken lightly.

It applies to everyone – jabbed or non jabbed – unless they are singing/playing in the worship band, leading a service, eating/drinking or clinically exempt.

Experiment in Bible reading with Paul’s letter to the Romans

This invitation is for anyone, old and young, beginner or expert, churchgoer or not.

The experiment will begin with a meeting on Thursday 4 November, either at 12-2pm (bring your lunch) or 7-9pm,  in the Church. Choose the time that suits you.

The core process of the experiment is that each person commits in November to reading  Romans, by themselves and with friends, noting their discoveries on the way.

We will share and reflect on our results in meetings on Thursday 2 December, either at 12-2pm or 7-9pm.

To make sure everything is in order before we begin would you please register your interest by either calling 0113 2693750 or by emailing admin@moortownbaptistchurch.onmicrosoft.com

(Facilitated by Haddon Willmer)

Sunday 24 October – The mind

On Sunday 24th of October we turn our attention to the mind. Haddon will be sharing his thoughts based around Romans chapter 12 verses 1 to 8 – see below.

As usual the Service will also be streamed on our YouTube channel which means that not only can you join us live but you can revisit it any time you like.

Oh, and just a reminder that with Covid infection rates still rising and having had a number of challenges from people regarding MBC’s policy re face masks your leadership team is now insisting that with the exception of worship/group leaders, those singing or playing in the band, people eating or drinking and the clinically exempt everyone must wear one in church at all times.

1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Humble Service in the Body of Christ

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Sunday October 17th – affairs of the heart.

20 My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words.
21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart;
22 for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.
23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
24 Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead fix your gaze directly before you.
26 Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.

Caring and sharing. Shelley Dring tells us just how much our Harvest gifts mean to people

Last Sunday we opened our Harvest café and saw over 90 people join us either in church or on line to have a drink, a pastry, make an autumn wreath, to sing and to pray but most importantly to make a difference.

We were overwhelmed with all the donations of food and toiletries that were brought in both before, on the day itself and even some on the following Monday.

Our next task was to sort and carefully put half of the donations into one huge pile and the rest into another. Only then could we load them into our cars and set off on our first run, to the Leeds North and West Foodbank. Here we were told that as stocks were running short they were ‘very ready’ for harvest festivals. Indeed the following day Martin Lewis the Warehouse and Logistics manager emailed to say “Thanks for the generous donation, the total weight was 257kg!  We will distribute the food to the most needy in the community”.

The following day, Tuesday, Zac kindly brought his van up to MBC and we took the other half of your donations to Cragg House Farm at Cookridge, the home of Caring for Life. Here we were greeted by Pam Parkinson and two of her volunteers who helped us unload the van and put all the stuff into a tent ready to be sorted.

Pam was bowled over by all the gifts, and she asked if we would pass on her grateful thanks and told us that she would be praying for Moortown Baptist Church too as we help build God’s kingdom in Leeds together. In fact before we left Zac and I spent some time talking with the CFL team looking at ways in which we might partner more closely with them in the future.

So, thanks again for all your donations as well as the help in receiving them, loading them and taking part, in person or online.

Please keep praying for God to open doors to new opportunities and to renew our vision to see what we can do that is already right in front of us.

I was reminded of this today as it popped up on my phone… I’m not sure who actually said it first but I think it fits pretty well with all that we have been trying to do together this week

“When you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence”.

Shelley

Playing our part in growing MBC’s harvest

The message from MBC’s Harvest Service was clear… there’s far more to this annual ritual than simply turning up and gifting toilet rolls, UHT milk and tins of tuna to people in need!

Yes, Caring For Life and the Leeds North and West Foodbank will be more than grateful for our generous donations, but as Nathan pointed out in his message, as Christians, playing our part in planting seeds and weeding out that which will stifle their growth, in watering, in feeding and then finally rejoicing with God at the strength and the heartfelt commitment of the yield is also an inescapable part of the plan.

So thank you to everyone who brought gifts to our Harvest, may God bless you and as He does may He remind us all that “Raising the glorious Harvest home” isn’t something we can simply pick up from a supermarket shelf.

Lunch Club shows that whether you’re 18 or 80 tennis is a winner

Not wishing to be outdone by teenager Emma Raducanu’s recent win at the US Open, MBC’s Senior’s Worker Carole Smith decided that a new sport ought to be added to the Lunch Club timetable… balloon tennis!

“It was” says Carole “not only a great way to get a little bit active but it was also a whole lot of fun. In fact such was the excitement that one lady lasted the whole 40 minutes, whilst others rather than changing ends swapped round with new partners.”

This was the first time Carole had tried balloon tennis and by looking at the pictures it proved a huge success.

“It’s a great addition to our active games repertoire” said Carole “joining amongst other sports floor curling, soft archery and adapted table tennis.”

“The beauty about all of these sports is that they each require slightly different skills and therefore suit different members of the group.  However, we also discovered that once you have been brave enough to break the traditional mould (and replace balls with balloons) there are no end of combinations you can try.”
