Do you remember our youngster’s Nepal Cake Bake… well here’s what they achieved

April 22, 2019 by John Sherbourne

Besides receiving this splendid certificate of thanks Hilary Willmer was recently sent a link to the Spring edition of a wonderful 24 page magazine called Today in Nepal. This publication is free to download by clicking on any of the highlighted links.  It really is a great read, not only is it packed with stories of change and new beginnings, it brings fresh insight into the amazing work that the International Nepal Fellowship and its supporters are doing. Below are just a few tasters of some of the Spring edition’s stories.

A new chapter for people with disabilities in Gorkha and Banke

After four years of hard work the projects in Gorkha are drawing to a close. Partner communities who lived through the trauma and devastation caused by massive earthquakes in 2015 have finished rebuilding their homes and public buildings. In helping them recover, INF focused primarily on the needs of people with disabilities and many communities are now much more inclusive. Peoples’ attitudes have changed and homes and public buildings are accessible for all.

In this magazine you can see how Manju and Devna, two young women who participated in a similar project in Banke, managed to turn around their lives. Thanks to your gifts, circumstances of hundreds of people like Manjuand Devna, who are living with disabilities, have significantly improved. Local groups are ready to carry on with the work by themselves, so the project will be coming to an end in June – a great achievement to celebrate…

New communities in Bajura are preparing to work with INF

After five years, we will soon be saying goodbye to people in our projects in Jukot, Sappata and Wai.
Meanwhile, others are preparing for a new chapter on their journey out of poverty. The majority of our selfhelp groups in Bajura are already in the process of registering as independent cooperatives. With a helping hand from supporters like you, local people pooled their resources and worked together to improve their income opportunities. Families are now better placed to earn a reliable income and many no longer need to leave home to work abroad. They have food all your around and can afford to send their children to school. People in Himali and Budhinanda have seen the change that INF’s work has brought to their neighbouring communities and are eagerly preparing to follow their example. Maheswori and Nanda are two of the leaders of newly established self-help groups. You can meet them on page 16.Green Pastures Hospital – new services to reach more patients

UK donations and gifts left in wills have funded the first phase of the hospital’s development. Thanks to your generosity we were able repair and refurbish buildings, and to upgrade wards and theatres. The team of specialists is steadily growing and the first new services are already available. The focus on poor and marginalised people remains at the heart of Green Pastures’ leadership team. With a growing range of services, some paying clients and a dedicated Poor Fund the vision that no one will be send away is well on its way.Nepal’s first hospice for all life-limiting or terminal conditions

Palliative care at Green Pastures is also ready for a step change. Over the last three years, thanks to your gifts, we were able to pilot a basic hospice services. This was hugely successful. As a result, a large donor has agreed to fund a hospice building in Green Pastures grounds; we have pledged to find the funding for additional staff, furniture and equipment. Hospice care is rare in Nepal and only available at a few large cancer-focused hospitals. The hospice will be the first in Nepal to offer care for all patients, regardless of their condition. And, as it will be an integral part of Green Pastures, patients will benefit from its whole range of services, including pain management and counselling.Your support has made all this possible. Thank you.

These are just some of the highlights and you can find much more inside your magazine. Much has already been achieved, but our plans remain ambitious – the need in Nepal is still great. Our focus is, as always, to serve poor and marginalised people. People who are hidden, neglected or excluded because of their caste, a disease or disability. We want them to have the best medical care possible, fair opportunities to access work and education, and a chance to live fulfilled and independent lives in inclusive communities where all can play an equal part. Change is possible – hopefully this magazine will show you how much we can achieve together. Thank you for your support.

After eleven days and nearly as many excursions, it’s a fond farewell to our Romanian friends

March 23, 2019March 17, 2019 by John Sherbourne

As our Romanian friends fly home from Doncaster Airport Howard Dews has sent in some pictures taken during their visit. Venue’s visited by “Rod’s Tours” included a sixteen hour round trip to London, Filey (taking in the now traditional fish and chip lunch) the Yorkshire Dales, York, Whitby, Kirkstall Abbey and of course Primark.

On this eleven day visit our eight guests, none of whom had visited the UK before came from two different churches; four from Pastor Noemi’s village of Cserefalva and four are from the village of Bikafalva where Zsuzsi is pastor.

On their behalf let me say thank you to their hosts… Karen and Michael Ross, Rod Russell, Howard Dews and anyone else who provided support.

Nepali cake bake draws the crowds and raises almost £350

March 11, 2019March 11, 2019 by John Sherbourne

Last Sunday morning, combined with a presentation about MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) which reported on the relief that helicopters operated by MAF brought to Nepal following the tragic 2015 earthquake our young people put their baking skills to the test in aid of the International Nepali Fellowship.

The work that Chris and Debbie Drew do in Nepal, the Drews are two of the overseas missionaries that MBC support, falls within the remit of INF who focus amongst other things on organising projects that provide clean drinking water, toys for children with disabilities, raw materials for fruit farmers and chickens for family egg businesses.

Well done to all our bakers, and of course to Mary and Emily who raised the magnificent sum of £30 by selling Slime.

The choice of exactly which projects they’ll support will be left to our young people with Refresh and Inspire in charge of an equal share of the cake bake pot. However, the INF’s Really Good Gift scheme is open to everyone so if you would like to help all you need do is go to www.inf.org.uk/gifts

Fairtrade Fortnight – 25 February to 10 March

March 3, 2019February 24, 2019 by John Sherbourne

Here at MBC we marked the start of Fairtrade Fortnight by once again inviting Roger Robson and his Beehive team to hold a Fairtrade stall following our morning service. If you thought that buying Fairtrade and Traidcraft products was simply a way of restocking your chocolate drawer whilst at the same time doing a bit of good you’re selling the programme short; supporting Fairtrade and Traidcraft is participating in a long running, world wide campaign to bring about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

To underline the seriousness of the task in hand here’s an extract from the Fairtrade website: For two weeks each year, thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to celebrate the people who grow our food, people who live in some of the poorest countries in the world and who are often exploited and badly paid. This year we are focusing on the people – in particular the women – who grow the cocoa in the chocolate we love so much.

£1.86 is the amount a cocoa farmer in West Africa needs to earn each day in order to achieve a living income. Currently, a typical cocoa farmer in Cote d’Ivoire lives on around 74p a day. Almost all cocoa farmers in West Africa live in poverty.

For the women the situation is even worse. They may plant and harvest on the farm, look after children, carry water, collect wood, cook and clean for the family, and transport the cocoa beans to market but often with fewer rights than men.

This is why we at Fairtrade are campaigning for a living income to become a reality for cocoa farmers in West Africa. If we can work together with governments, chocolate companies and retailers to make the commitments and policies necessary, then we can make it happen.

Roger will be running another Fairtrade stall here at MBC 0n Sunday March 31st which seems to me to be just about the right time and place to buy your Real Easter Eggs. In the meantime The Beehive will also be holding their annual coffee morning and Fairtrade Fair on Saturday 2 March at Chapel Allerton Methodist Centre between 10am and 12.30.

For more information about the Fairtrade movement, and particularly Fairtrade Fortnight visit their website at http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/en/get-involved/current-campaigns/Fairtrade-Fortnight

Introducing MBC Missionaries. Chris and Bela Singh – Missionaries with WEC International

November 21, 2018November 18, 2018 by John Sherbourne

Chris and Bela have been missionaries with WEC International since 1989 working with the radio ministry, Radio Worldwide (RW).They moved to Rothwell with RW in 1993 and joined MBC partly because of the children’s and young peoples’ ministry. Their son and daughter, Abishek and Anugrah, grew up here. Anugrah is now married living in London and mother of Solomon – Chris and Bela’s first grandchild.

Chris travels around the world training Christians to use Radio and new media for spreading the Gospel and Church planting. His fruitful ministry includes training nationals in closed countries and opening Radio Stations in Africa and elsewhere. He has Masters degrees in Communication and Mission Studies and a PGCE. Bela serves in WEC’s base in Leeds as a book-keeper and administrator and is involved in local church work and in teaching English to women from South Asia in Harehills.

The WEC centre in Rothwell was recently sold and Radio Worldwide moved to new studios in City Evangelical Church in Beeston, where Chris works when he is not travelling. Chris and Bela still live in Rothwell

The best ways to support the Singhs are:

 Request to receive their prayer letters by emailing Chris and Bela at chrisrww@gmail.com

 Give financial support either through MBC or WEC International OR through Stewardship at https://www.give.net/20022776 OR directly to them. Chris and Bela rely on God for their financial support and totally depend on giving from churches and individuals.

BMS World Mission – catch up with its latest news

September 18, 2018 by John Sherbourne

Question: what does a pioneer church planter working in a Buddhist village in Thailand have in common with a group of people from Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Blackwood?

Answer: stories about both feature in BMS World Mission’s latest ENGAGE magazine.

Amongst other things issue 42 also contains a message from General Director Kang-San Tan, a feature about how in Afghanistan field workers are helping to reduce the number of mother and baby deaths by educating villagers about preventable illnesses and birthing complications, and a thank you from Lebanon for the help BMS World Mission is giving Syrian refugees.

In the package I received (free, by post) there was also a timely reminder that whilst Christmas may still be more than three months off it’s never too soon to stock up on cards or notelets from the organisations 2018 catalogue.

ENGAGE is available totally free of charge either by post or on line. To subscribe call 01235 517700, email mail@bmsworldmission.org or go to https://www.bmsworldmission.org/get-involved/stay-informed/engage/

Moortown Baptist Church, both as a church and through individual giving supports BMS World Mission in a number of different ways. For information about how you can help please speak with Roger Robson.
