New BMS World Mission Engage magazine out now

June 11, 2018June 11, 2018 by John Sherbourne

Published three times a year, the latest edition of ENGAGE, BMS World Mission’s brilliant magazine is now available either in print (completely free through the post) or on line via https://www.bmsworldmission.org/get-involved/stay-informed/engage/

Issue 41’s  cover is taken up by a picture of BMS World Mission surgeons Andrea and Mark Hotchkin. The couple who have spent eight years living and working in Bardia, Chad “live in a two room mud and stone house with a reed roof, no windows and no running water.”

Inside there are stories from Uganda, India, China and Nepal as well as a hard hitting three page feature about modern day slavery here in the UK.

You can support BMS World Mission in a number of ways including through its novel Birthdays Scheme; each year, on your birthday, instead of receiving a gift you commit to send the BMS a donation. Last year this simple but most effective plan raised over £300,000.

Roger Robson is MBC’s BMS World Mission representative so if you would like more information about any of its work he’s the man to see.

Despite the big freeze there was a warm MBC welcome for Andor, Zsuzsi and Bence

March 5, 2018March 5, 2018 by John Sherbourne

Having flown in to the UK during one of the coldest snaps on record there was a warm welcome for Andor, Zsuzsi and Bence Ferko as they joined us on Sunday.

Here for just a week and staying with Karen and Michael Ross the couple’s ties, but Zsuzsi’s in particular go back a long way with MBC.

As pastor of their local church in Romania Zsuzsi’s mother together with family and friends have been visiting Leeds ever since we set up MRS G, our Romania Support Group. Today, of course, both Zsuzsi and Andor are themselves ordained church leaders, and by the look of it Bence who was more than keen to join mum and dad upfront at Sunday’s evening service might just keep up the tradition.

It was great to see you, we hope you have enjoyed your visit and we wish you a safe journey home.

Engage with ENGAGE and discover how from Ukraine to Sudan and from Mozambique to the Thai-Burma border BMS World Mission is transforming lives

January 25, 2018January 25, 2018 by John Sherbourne

Originally called The Particular Baptist Society for the Propagation of the Gospel Amongst the Heathen, BMS World Mission as it’s now known works among some of the most marginalised and least evangelised people, in some of the most fragile places on earth.

Its aim is to bring life in all its fullness through seven key ministries: church, development, education, health, justice, leadership and relief.

Founded in 1792, BMS alongside a whole raft of partner organisations now works on four continents and is supported by both individuals and by local churches from not only here in the UK but across the world.

Over the years, here at Moortown Baptist Church we have not only seen a number of our members go off to serve with BMS World Mission, we’ve supported them as individuals and the society itself in a number of different ways.

For instance some of us make one off or regular donations, even more have signed up to the BMS Birthday Scheme; on your birthday you receive a card but you send BMS a gift. We collect postage stamps, get sponsorship for fun runs etc. or we host Coffee for a Cause events.

Nowadays the best way to keep up to date with everything that’s happening with BMS World Mission is to sign up to receive its ENGAGE magazine. Published totally free of charge three times a year you can arrange delivery either through the post or on line by visiting https://www.bmsworldmission.org/get-involved/stay-informed/engage/

Recently, during a morning service Roger Robson the BMS World Mission Secretary here at MBC gave us an update on our contact with and support for the organisation. If you missed Roger’s presentation or you feel this is something you could support please have a word with him.

The most recent edition of ENGAGE, Issue 40, comes complete with a 2018 Prayer Guide. Although, sadly, for security reasons some World Mission workers must remain anonymous this in addition to highlighting 365 prayer points really does personalise matters by not only introducing us to a number of individuals and families but also to the specific projects they are involved with.

Greetings and news from Cluj

December 23, 2017December 23, 2017 by John Sherbourne
Greetings and may you have blessed holidays!

As we wrote in the previous letter, about the process of bringing a new pastor, we inform you that we had the general assembly on November 5th, as planned, but things did not materialized. Therefore we are in the position to re-establish connections and search for another pastor. We thank you for your prayers and for your financial support that you sent us in 2017. God bless you!

Below, you will see the appreciation thoughts from the young members of our church that benefited from the scholarship we have provided with your help.

With appreciation

Veja Mircea

Thanks from church Students

Hello. My name is Laura and i’m a student in Cluj Napoca. I feel so blessed and loved by God and I want to thank you for being a part of it, for sharing God’s love by caring for us. Your care and kindness is amazing. May God bless you with eternal blessings. May He always walk by you and guide you on every step of your way so you can keep on doing His will. Happy Holidays!

My name is Damaris, i’m 23 and i’m a student at the University of Art and Design in Cluj Napoca. I hope that with God’s help I will be able to express the wonders of our Father through painting. I want to be able to reach people’s hearts and praise God with all I do. God bless you! Thank you so much for the scholarship, it surprised me. Last night I was praying for money so I could buy paint colors and this morning I received the message from Mariana with the good news. I was very happy. I hope that God will bring you blessings. I wish God will use me to bring joy and support just as He is using you. Happy Holidays!

Hello. My name is Sebastian and I am a student in Mechanic Engineering in 4th year.  I`m from a family of 4 (parents and one brother) i live with my parents for now, my brother got married and he lives in Germany. About what I do in church…. I am leading a worship group, a Bible study group and I am part of the youth board.   I want to thank you for the support and I pray that God will bless you.
Thanks again for supporting me.
May God bless you with His Love!

Dear brothers,
I`m very grateful for your donation for me and for many others. I really appreciate the gesture of donating a part of your money in use for other people. Your act, your kindness is an example for me. This act is from God and that is good.  I thank God for giving you this mission to help people who hardly manage to live without money.
God bless you Kind.
With all gratitude from Cluj-Napoca,
David.

Hello, my name is Dan Hornai, I am 19 years old and I`m in the 12th grade at Colegiul National Pedagogic Gheorghe Lazar. I`m not very interested in high school class because I wanted something else, more math actually but in the last 3 or 4 years, I learned that everything is happening with a reason because we have a beautiful and loving God which has a unique plan for everyone. So, I am writing  to say thank you very much for the money, especially because is that time of the year when you really need them. I hope that God will reward you for your kindness.
Sincerely,
Dan

My name is Suciu Daniel, I am 17 years old and I am a high school student  in the 11th grade at Victor Babes High School, Natural Sciences profile. I have different hobbies like sports, lately I play the guitar  and especially I like the nature walks. My name is Debora and I`m  a student at Babes Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. I study physics and my dream is to become a scientist. I choose this domain inspired by people like Harry L. Poe and Jimmy H. Davis. Their book Science and Faith: An evangelical dialogue made me realize once again how great our God is and how everything makes sense as we contemplate  and consider the questions raised by modern science.  I`m very thankful for your help. I am amazed the way God works in my life and I`m grateful for having brothers and sisters all over the globe. My favourite verse is found in Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things trough Christ who strengthens me” and I believe this is the most amazing encouragement.

Thank you again and God bless you!

Engage… the latest BMS World Mission news from near and far

September 22, 2017 by John Sherbourne

The latest edition of BMS World Mission’s magazine, Engage, is out now, and once again it’s filled with features, news, updates, letters and prayer requests from across the globe.

One piece, headlined Vive la Revolution, will be of particular interest to those of us who know John and Sue Wilson. The Wilsons have close ties with MBC which go back many years. Having recently moved from Lyon to Paris, as it says in the article: “John and Sue are now breathing news life into Avenue de Maine Baptist Church in the heart of Paris. John also leads FEEBF’s (French Baptist Federation) Ministry Commission, while Sue heads up the Federation’s Youth Committee, which includes organising the national youth conference.”

You can sign up to receive the Engage magazine, completely free of charge, either on line or through the post by speaking to BMS World Mission rep Roger Robson or by going to  https://www.bmsworldmission.org/get-involved/stay-informed/engage/

Two years on from the devastating earthquakes, BMS World Mission reports on a very special self-help project

August 17, 2017August 17, 2017 by John Sherbourne

Manisha is ten and Ayushma is six. These little girls are two of the thousands of people your gifts to BMS World Mission’s Nepal earthquake appeal continue to help.

Living in Gorkha District, one of the areas hardest hit by the 2015 earthquakes, Manisha and Ayushma were left particularly vulnerable after the disaster. Both of them have hearing problems, and their mothers were having to shout at them to get them to understand anything.

BMS and our partners have set up a self-help group in the village for people affected by the earthquakes, particularly focusing on those with disabilities. Thanks to this, both Manisha and Ayushma have managed to get operations to improve their hearing. Now they can learn at school and thrive!

You can meet Manisha, Ayushma and some of the other people you are helping in Nepal by reading this story.

Debbie Drew and her post holiday blues

August 17, 2017August 16, 2017 by John Sherbourne

August 2017

Dear friends

We returned from holiday last week and I must admit to the post-holiday blues.  Although we live comfortably in Nepal, adjusting again to power cuts, monsoon rains, 90% humidity, water deliveries when our water runs out, soaking our fruit and salad in iodine solution to clean it, putting loo roll in a bin rather than down the loo, takes a few days.

With nervous excitement, Rebekah, Sam, Tabea and Josh started back at school on Tuesday (years 10, 8, 4, 6).  It’s their school (KISC) we would particularly ask you to pray for this month.

THIS IS JUST THE START OF DEBBIE AND CHRIS DREW’S LATEST UPDATE… YOU CAN READ MORE BY FOLLOWING THE LINK BELOW.
